Laptops come with many different ports available to users but based on what the user needs will determine the kind of laptop they purchase. Typically the more the better, but that’s not necessarily true anymore. Today we will go our the different ports you should consider when deciding to purchase a new laptop for the next few years.

List of Ports you can find on Your Laptop.

USB- A This is the standard and most common USB connector. Many products support this connector and chances are if you have purchased a laptop within the last five years, then you will at least have this port on the side. Many devices still support this USB connector and it will be another 3 to 5 years before USB -Goes absolute.

USB-B A USB-B port is primarily used in computer devices such as printers and scanners. This particular device cable consists of an end as a USB -B (slightly larger and has a cylinder shape) and the other end has a standard USB-A or 3.0 end. These cables are on the dying end and or not used on a large scale anymore.

USB-C -This is the new standard port available on laptops. A USB -C is a 24-port system that can transfer data up to glops. There are two types of USB connections, the Gen 1 t Gen 2. The major difference in these connections is the data speed. The Gen 1 ……..

Thunderbolt 3.– This is an Apple standard technology that is a USB-C connector, but a different technology altogether. The Thunderbolt 3 connectors support data speeds up to 40 Gbps which is extremely fast when it comes to having a USB connection on the side of your laptop.

The answer is it depends on what you need. The best connection to have with this port, ya can add many other accessories at the highest level with a docking station. If you don’t want to use a docking station then it still boils down to what you need. Typically newer laptops only have USB A, USBC, and thunderbolt ports. Some laptops still have Sd card readers. This is useful if you still use devices that support these memory cards.

HDMI – Although not on every new laptop, this input is still extremely popular.

USB-A – This has been the standard USB port for at least 15 years, but due to the advancements in USB technology, the USB-A port is slowly being faced-out.

USB-3.0– You will find this port on most laptops alongside the USB-C port. USB 3.0 is backward compatible and can take USB-A devices. The major difference between USB 3.0 and USB-A is the data transfer speed. USB 3.0 can transfer data speeds up to 5Gbps, whereas the USB-A port can only transfer speeds up to 480 Mbps.

SD card slot-This is up in the air simply because you may find them on laptops or you may not. Nowadays, SD cards are used for devices like cameras, drones, and other portable devices, so not many people use SD cards anymore.

USB-C – Although the USB-C port/cable has been out for a while, it’s still considered new technology. This port pretty much comes standard on each new laptop, and will eventually take over all the other ports. It has a small two-sided tip and can transfer data speeds up to 10 GBPS.

3 mm Jack – This speaker jack comes standard on many laptops, but due to Bluetooth speakers and USB hubs, some laptop manufacturers have done away with this audio port.

Least common Laptop Ports

Ethernet port On today’s laptops you will hardly ever see ethernet ports anymore with the rise of WIFI, many people didn’t need to use an ethernet part anymore, so they did away with them and at the same time saved space. Many laptop companies targeting businesses still have ethernet ports on the side of their laptops. This is because WIFI can be spotty due to EMI and easier to hack than a hard-line connection.

VGA port This is another old part that’s on its last leg. You will rarely if any see VGA ports attached to laptops nowadays. You can still use VGA cables, but it will have to be through a USB hub or docking station.
